Vivian Kubrick, the daughter of the late director Stanley Kubrick, has addressed conspiracy theories about her father’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut, conspiracies spread, in part, a few years ago by podcaster Joe Rogan and his guest, filmmaker Roger Avary.
“You know, this is as good a time as any to finally address the missing 20 minutes from Eyes Wide Shut. It’s a story that has been circulating for many years, so let me tell you what I actually know and don’t know. For context, my father always had his outtakes incinerated once a film was finished, specifically to prevent the studio from later re-editing his work or creating alternative versions. There has been a lot of speculation that some 20 minutes were removed from Eyes Wide Shut after he died,” Kubrick posted on X.
“This will be very disappointing to many people, but I certainly did not hear anything about a missing 20 minutes at the time, nor have I heard anything since that would confirm such a section ever existed. I guess you could stop reading right here,” Kubrick continued, clarifying she wasn’t in “a position to know everything that may have happened before or immediately after my father’s death” as she was in Los Angeles to score a movie at the time.

“The only alteration I heard about at the time was the use of CGI—computer-generated figures—to obscure some of the nudity in the orgy scene, which Warner Brothers wanted in order to secure an R rating for the film. But I did not hear that any shots or scenes were removed,” Kubrick wrote.
“When my father died, Eyes Wide Shut had reached picture lock and was moving through the final stages of post-production. It had just been shown to the studio heads, I assume with a temporary music track, while the final sound mix and some of the music work were still to be completed. This was 1999, in the era of physical film distribution.”
As Kubrick explained, Eyes Was Shut was edited on Avid, a process that didn’t include any “permanent digital archive people imagine today.” After further elaborating on the negative creation and editing process of the time, Kubrick added, “I have no knowledge of whether any of the Avid editorial material from the production still exists.”

Em uma série de posts no X, ela afirmou que nunca houve confirmação de que esse material existiu e classificou a história como uma teoria da conspiração sem evidências.
A especulação ganhou força em dezembro de 2024, quando o cineasta Roger Avary, em participação no podcast de Joe Rogan, afirmou que a Warner Bros. teria alterado o final original do filme, que mostraria o casal interpretado por Tom Cruise e Nicole Kidman entregando a filha a um culto pedófilo — uma suposta referência a Jeffrey Epstein. Avary também alegou que a mudança teria ocorrido contra a vontade de Kubrick, poucos dias antes de sua morte.
Vivian, no entanto, contesta a versão. Segundo ela, na época da morte do pai, o filme já estava em fase final de pós-produção, com a edição feita no sistema Avid, e ela não ouviu nada sobre cenas removidas. A única alteração que chegou ao seu conhecimento foi o uso de CGI para obscurecer nudez na cena da orgia, uma exigência da Warner para garantir a classificação indicativa R (menores acompanhados).
Ela também explicou que Kubrick tinha o hábito de incinerar material não utilizado após a conclusão de cada filme, justamente para evitar versões alternativas. Sobre os arquivos digitais da edição, Vivian disse não saber se algo sobreviveu, mas sugeriu que a University of the Arts London, que guarda o acervo oficial do diretor, poderia ter mais informações. Mesmo assim, ela afirmou não ter conhecimento de qualquer material que comprove a existência dos supostos 20 minutos.
A filha do cineasta encerrou dizendo que, se o material existisse, ela teria descoberto, já que se envolveu diretamente na proteção do trabalho do pai após a morte dele. Curiosamente, os posts terminaram com hashtags sobre os Epstein Files e marcações a Joe Rogan, Alex Jones e Julian Dorey, figuras associadas a teorias conspiratórias.
A Warner Bros. sempre manteve que a versão lançada nos cinemas é a de Kubrick, e Nicole Kidman também já afirmou o mesmo.
